Camp Lesbo

We stayed up too late last night so it was really difficult to get the day started today - I meant to get up early and go into work so I could leave a little early, but it just didn’t happen. Also, I had to load the car up before I left so that took a couple trips up and down.
It was a slow, quiet day at work - most everyone was out of the office much of the day. Brian and I went over to 6464 Sunset Blvd. for their annual fire drill BBQ, but we were late and by the time we got there almost everyone was gone, except Councilmember LaBonge and his staff, who got there at the same time as we did. The food was good, anyway.
Finally, the end of the workday came so Dylan rode the subway down to Hollywood. I circled the metro station and talked to my mom on the phone while waiting for Dylan to emerge from the subway. We were on our way by 5:30 which was pretty good timing. We hit some traffic east of downtown, which was expected, and then after a stop in Alhambra we stopped again at the Wal-Mart near Baldwin Park to get our supplies. We both hate shopping at Wal-Mart and generally avoid it like the plague which is easy since there aren’t any near where we live anyway. We used to like Target but of course now we’re boycotting it since they donated to an anti-gay republican (redundant) candidate in Minnesota where the corporation is headquartered. Anyway we made an exception this time and filled our cart with camping supplies and packaged foods.
After we got off the 10 freeway and headed north, I realized the road was very familiar, and when we got to Yucca Valley I told Dylan I was pretty sure this was the same way we had gone when Brandon, Angie and I went to the Clean Air Clear Stars festival last year in Pioneertown (Dandy Warhols played). Sure enough, there was the sign, saying “Pioneertown, 4 miles” off to the left when we got to the main intersection. We finally got to Joshua Tree around 10:30 or so, and lots of our group were just getting ready to go to bed, but there were some girls up in our camp, which was Camp Lesbo. I thought Dylan just made up that name, but when we pulled up they had taped a rainbow “Camp Lesbo” sign up on the post by the road! So we sat by the campfire and chatted with those who were still hanging out.
The desert was beautiful at night, with all the eerie Joshua Trees illuminated by the moon and stars, and the quiet stillness that you can only find when you’ve driven this far away from Los Angeles.
