Movie night

We had a Sunset Vine BID Board meeting today and at the end it got a little heated regarding the situation with the Farmers Market and the Film School. I won't go into much details here in this blog but everyone who knows me knows that I've been really disappointed to witness the media spin and the lemming mentality that this situations has displayed. Obviously (it would seem obvious) no one has it out for the Farmers Market, no one is "against" farmers, or against people having access to healthy foods. But the fact is, unlike most Farmers Markets, the one in Hollywood takes places on public streets, blocking access for many businesses and creating issues for property owners in the immediate vicinity. Rather than working with these businesses and property owners, the Farmers Market just cries "victim" and tries to smear the Film School for daring to want to use their own property. Through my job, I have found myself on the unpopular side of arguments several times now, but the thing that makes it difficult is the "lemming" effect, where people jump on the bandwagon of something that seems like a no-brainer, without taking any time to look at the other side of things - this being all the people "supporting" the Farmers Market by wearing the "Save the Farmers Market" t-shirts (usually something has to be threatened before a need to save it arises), and trashing the Film School in the press and on websites like Yelp. It's sort of the same situation with Food Trucks. Everyone seems to "love" food trucks without thinking of any of the negative consequences of food trucks. The most popular argument I've heard for food trucks is that if the brick and mortar restaurants would offer either a better selection of food and/or lower prices, that people would be happy eating there. But the truth is, people just like the easy way out, they like to have what they want without dealing with consequences. If people keep eating at the food trucks, it will put the brick and mortar restaurants out of business, and then the food trucks will stop coming to those areas because they will be blighted and there will be other restaurants to go poach customers from.
Anyway, after work Ben came over so we could watch "Bring it On" together as he had been wanting to. We originally saw it in the theatre together years ago when it came out. After that, we started watching "Blast from the Past" because Ben had visited Alicia Silverstone's character's house recently and wanted to see it in the movie, but we ended up watching the whole thing.
