New Year's Eve
We slept in and had lunch with Luther and Andrew and I started making cookies since Connor was coming over.
I realized that I pretty much hate New Years Eve and every year end up having at best, just a decent night, or at worst, full on trauma! So, to curb any misbegotten notion of trying to go out on what we call "amateur night," I told Dylan to let Jennie know that we'd be willing to babysit Connor for the night. As luck would have it, Jennie hadn't made any plans for a sitter yet, but New Year's Eve is also her birthday and she was very thrilled with our offer!
Jennie and Sean came over to drop Connor off in the afternoon while Luther and Andrew were still packing their stuff up so for awhile we had a full house. Soon, though, all the adults left and it was just us with Connor.
We had seen Connor several times lately so he wasn't shy at all and immediately started playing with his toys and telling us stories. Once the toys had been played out, we decided to watch something on the new TV. We were going through the PayPerView movies and the one that caught Conner's eye was called "Babies." It was a documentary that follows four babies growing up in very different parts of the world (Namibia, Mongolia, United States and Japan). We watched the preview to make sure it was really the movie Connor wanted and he said it was, to our surprise. We watched it with him and were kind of worried during some of the more graphic scenes which included live childbirth and lots of breastfeeding! We just had to keep reminding ourselves that it was nature and educational. Connor seemed to really enjoy the movie and got several laughs out of it when the babies would do silly things.
After that we decided to watch Toy Story 3 which was more because Dylan and I wanted to see it. It was also in HD which was the first time we had actually gotten to see HD on our TV. It was great - we loved the movie, and Dylan and I were both shedding a few tears at the end!
By the time the movie was over, Connor was pretty tired but it was nearing midnight so we told him he had to just stay up a little longer to ring in the new year. We watched the ball drop at Times Square on CNN and then we had our sparkling apple cider toast and headed up to the roof to try and watch fireworks, but the only ones we saw were so far away that it wasn't that exciting.
Once we got back down to the apartment, Connor was clearly about to fall asleep so we put him to bed on the couch and then we went to bed ourselves. It was perhaps the most peaceful and grown up New Year's Eve I've ever had, even though we spent it with a kid!
Looking back, this has been an amazing year and I'm so glad I decided to keep a journal of it. So many beautiful and life changing things happened this year. I guess I'll do this again in 2020! Til then - take care!
