I was very excited to have Angie and Brandon coming over for dinner and a movie. Specifically, the movie "Spiceworld." A few months or so ago, Angie said something about needing to watch "Spiceworld," to which I said, "you mean watch it again!" It turned out that somehow she had never witnessed this cinematic masterpiece! So I of course arranged a time for us to have a little viewing party. Now, I guess I forget that not everyone is as huge of a Spice Girls fan as I am. I saw the movie on opening day, back in the Fox Theater in downtown Hays, Kansas... my cousin Andrea was nice enough to accompany me. Since then, I've probably watched it another 25 times or so on VHS and then later on DVD. So I've pretty much memorized all the lines - the good ones, at least. Someone replied to my Craigslist ad! I was so thrilled when I got the e-mail. It's a girl who is a classically trained pianist but she loves 80's music, new wave, synth pop etc. and would like to start performing in that realm. It sounds really promising, so we are going to set up a time to meet soon. I didn't know it last night, but today Brandon and I were talking and he mentioned the lead singer of Does It Offend You, Yeah?'s last name is Rushent and I asked if he was related to Martin Rushent, and Brandon said it's his dad! For those of you unaware, Martin Rushent is a music producer who produced one of the all-time most influential albums of all time (at least for me), "Dare" by The Human League. He also produced a ton of other artists that I love including The Go-Go's and Altered Images. I set my cell phone alarm to go off at 9:40 cause I had so many things I wanted to get done before Joe's Oscar party. We go to his party every year and I had already e-mailed in my ballot with my predictions and choices yesterday but I really wanted to go see Hurt Locker before the party and I also needed to make my dish. It's a vegetarian party so no meat is allowed, and I have fun coming up with a recipe that is exciting without any meat in it. The theme of the party was "Ghetto Realness" inspired by the film "Precious" which I also regrettably hadn't seen yet. So, I found a recipe called Jamaican Red Bean Stew but I renamed it "Mrs. Weiss's Precious Bean Stew" after Mariah Carey's character in the movie (Dylan imdb'ed it get her character's name). Slept in this morning, despite some texts and phone calls that temporarily woke me up. Around noon, I finally got up and checked my phone, returning several messages. I called Marc to let him know I'd be cooking brunch soon, and to bring some champagne. I chopped six potatoes of various colors (gold, red and purple) into hash browns, fried them with some onions, and beat some eggs with milk, frying them with some green bell peppers and spring onions. Lastly, I sauteed some soy chorizo. Real chorizo is made of pituitary glands and lord knows what else, but soyrizo is delicious - it has the same flavor and texture but none of the guilt or wondering what you just ate. It was a fine meal and I got many compliments from Dylan and Marc. Then Dylan and I went to Santa Monica and rode the ferris wheel at the pier, just before sunset. It was so romantic and fun!
