Lunch in Lawrence
Adrienne woke up early to go get a spray tan so Dylan and I tried to sleep in but Maddie and Rocco apparently like to just bark all day while Adrienne and Emily are gone. So it was hard to actually sleep in. We got up in time to help Adrienne clean up her house when she got home and bring everything in from the backyard. Dylan had done a bunch of the dishes last night so it was actually pretty easy doing everything else. We packed Maddie up in the car with us and drove to mom and dad's in Olathe which is just about 15 minutes away, stopping at Dunkin Donuts on the way since we don't have those in LA and Dylan and I love their coffee after we had it in Boston.
Ronnie, Lisa and Caitlyn had already gone back to Hays so we missed them. When we got home we just had time to get ready to leave for Lawrence with mom. We were going to meet all the Strecker cousins for lunch. We joined them at Free State Brewery, one of my favorite places in Lawrence, and all of the cousins with the last name Strecker, except Brandon, were there! Scott and his wife Cindy, and their three children: Henry, Maggie, and Ada; Stuart and his wife Lori ad their daughters Lidia and Jai. And of course my aunt Jan was there too. She lives in Lawrence now and bought a really old (130+ years) house that we all walked too after we had lunch. Her house is beautiful! It really is a piece of history. The previous owner had done quite a bit to restore it, but Jan had obviously put in a lot more work. It's a tall brick home with several wooden parts added on throughout the years; the back part was a whole separate (small) house that they had tacked on many years ago and the kitchen was in that part. She had redone the whole kitchen so it was really nice and modern but still fit in with the rest of the house. The living room with the original fireplace was probably my favorite room because right at the end of it was a huge window with a box seat and there was really cool woodwork separating that part from the rest of the living room.
We hung out with them for awhile and it was nice to visit with my cousins Scott and Stuart. We were never super close growing up because they lived far away (either in Hutchinson and then later, Great Bend) and they were a little bit older than us. But Brandon and I have always really looked up to them and I know they constantly inspire me to be a better person; I'm sure Brandon feels the same. Scott and Cindy are moving to Portland, Oregon, with their kids soon which I'm sure will be a scary but exiting time for them as well as Stu and his family, and Jan, since they have all been together in Lawrence for so long. It was great to be able to spend time with them right before the big move.
After we left there, the four of us (mom, Adrienne, Dylan and I) walked back to Mass street to go shopping. I got some earrings and a "Fame" necklace at Claire's. Then we were walking by some new bar/restaurant called Esquina and they had blueberry margaritas advertised which we all thought sounded delicious so we stopped there for a drink.
Next we went to Love Garden, the record store that we always visit when we go to Lawrence. But they had moved to a new location on the main floor (they had been upstairs down the street before) and we thought it lost some of it's charm. We didn't end up buying anything although they did have the new Devo 12" and some reissued vinyl albums that I thought about getting, I just didn't know if they would be too difficult to take on the plane home.
When we got back to the car, we had two $3 tickets on our car since we didn't have enough money for the meter. We thought it was funny that the tickets were only $3 since in LA we're used to $60 parking tickets, but we were ticked that we got two of them! So we ended up paying $6 for parking which still, compared to LA, is a steal. Then we got almost all the way out of town back towards Olathe when we remembered that we had left a rug that Aunt Jan had given to Adrienne on her front porch so we had to turn around and go get that.
When we got home, Dad was grilling lamb ribs in the backyard. It was a delicious dinner. We ended up playing some games afterward before going to bed.
Hello 2010, goodbye junk!
NEW YEARS RESOLUTION LOG ENTRY 147
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, "Twin Peaks", cassette album. I bought this in Wal-Mart in 7th or 8th grade and I was so excited I had to open it up and look at the pictures before I had even checked out, which is probably illegal as far as Wal-Mart goes but I didn't care. I think this copy is a newer one though that I picked up recently.
