Day Five: Glam, Glitter and Anarchy

The title of this blog is also the headline I used for the various myspace bulletins promoting my bands show this night which took place at The Anarchy Library in Downey where we opened for Gene Loves Jezebal. From wikipedia:

"Gene Loves Jezebel is a gothic rock band from the early 1980s founded by twin brothers, Michael and Jay Aston.

Michael Aston (vocals) was the poetic, goth-leaning side of the twin brothers while Jay Aston’s distinctive banshee-like, wailing vocals supplied Gene Loves Jezebel with one of their many trademark quirks."

Also on the bill was Moscow, an all-girl band that showed influences of goth and new wave bands such as The Cure and Siouxsie & The Banshees. They were good and I enjoyed their show. We were up next and we were lucky to have both of our dancers on stage with us as the crowd was getting bigger in anticipation for GLJ and some of them were being a little rowdy and heckling our Drag Dancer, Dusty Bibles (Dylan's new alias; he is not retiring the Coco Ono, however; fear not).

We started with "R So" and stuck to the "hits" and the more aggressive songs since the crowd at the Anarchy is not really the kind that would be receptive to our more poppy material like "The Apple Falls" or our new song "Feb. 29" which we had been planning on debuting. We closed with "Mustache Rides" and "Slut Buffet" which seemed to be good choices and elicited some dancing.

Up next were our friends from Long Beach, Crush, who were sporting an elegant black and red theme (we had gone with Gold, Black and White although I'm not sure how cohesive we ended up looking). They opened with "Exodus" from their most recent album, which I am a big fan of. I danced with Mendi, Adam's girlfriend, and sang along to the choruses. All the other songs were new. Oh, I would be remiss if I didn't mention "the old guy". There was this really old guy who had been there all evening, since before we arrived, who had been going around dancing and acting like a teenager all night. It was funny to watch as people initially dismissed him and avoided him and eventually would have to acknowledge the absurdity and dance with him. During one of Crush's earlier numbers, a girl got a little too rowdy with him and they both ended up tumbling to the ground. Several people rushed to his aid, afraid that the old man had finally had too much. I could see that he was merely trying to find his glasses so they wouldn't get stepped on in the chaos. He finally grabbed them, got up, and within a few minutes was back to his dancing.

Gene Loves Jezebel, or at least one-half of the original twin brother duo and his new band, took the stage around 12:30 and I thought I recognized the first or second song but it wasn't until near the end of the set that they played a couple of their hits from back in the day and I got up to dance. The crowd wasn't that big but they were all excited and happy to be there. There was this woman named Debbie who was a fan, but Marc had spared her some embarrassment when she had been calling out "Jay, Jay!" to the lead singer, who was actually Jay's estranged brother Micheal.

We left around 2am and I drove back to West Hollywood and ended up crashing on the couch in the living room.
